PEI (polyetherimide) is an amorphous polymer with a unique transparent amber colour resistant to high temperatures. The material fulfils the highest requirements in terms of temperature resistance (continuous operating temperatures depending on the application and types from 170°C possible) and at the same time, is flame retardent due to its chemical makeup without flame proofing additives and at the same time, boasts very low smoke emission. It is characterised by its high strength, which can be further enhanced through the addition of fibre glass or carbon fibres. Its above-average dimensional stability and low tracking tendency complete the wide range of properties of polyetherimide. All these properties make the material an ideal candidate for the automotive and aviation industry. This thermoplastic is also commonly used in the communications and medical technology sectors.
ULTEM™ – A Resin that Takes the Heat
The ULTEM™ Resin family of amorphous thermoplastic polyetherimide (PEI) resins offers outstanding elevated thermal resistance, high strength and stiffness, and broad chemical resistance. ULTEM™ is available in transparent and opaque custom colors, as well as glass filled grades. Plus, ULTEM™ copolymers are available for even higher heat, chemical and elasticity needs. ULTEM™ resins uniquely balance both mechanical properties and processability, offering design engineers exceptional flexibility and freedom.
